And now, I bet you deflated and you're ready to close the page. I'm not exactly sure if you are aware of the stuff people use them for, but I'm going to make sure I show you some amazing and unique plants that exist out there.
1. Rafflesia arnoldii
I'm not exactly sure what this plant is good for, but it's one of the most rare flowers that exists out there. A singular flower can grow up to one meter in diameter, and apparently it is incredibly difficult to find because it takes 9-21 months for plant to develop, and the flower lasts for a maximum of five days. Also, I'm not sure how fortunate someone can find him or herself to find this, since it has a smell of decaying flash.
2. Polypodium polypodioides
This plant is also known as the Resurrection Fern. Why? Because it can survive droughts for a very long time. In times when there isn1t enough water it curls up and gets a brownish color, appearing to be dead. But when it gets water it becomes green again. They say it can survive for about a hundred years without any water. Neat, isn't it?
3. Nepenthes attenboroughii
This plant was discovered in 2009. It's probably the largest carnivorous plant out there. It's uniqueness consists of being able to "eat" animals as big as a rat. Scientists found it on Mount Victoria in the Philippines and named it after famed nature broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.
4. Desmodium Gyrans
Oh I want this plant so much... It's also named "Telegraph Plant", and it's "special power" is to be able to dance by it's own! Its leaves in jerky motions when exposed to direct sunlight, warmth or vibration – hence their reaction to music. This plant is famous for being a favorite of Charles Darwin, and is featured in depth in his book The Power of Movement in Plants. Here's a cool video about it!
5. Mimosa Pudica
We have this one at our Botanical Garden, so if you're from around here you've probably seen it. It's called Pudica because it's quite shy... You only have to touch it briefly and it will fold its leaves up in a jiffy. It even reacts to your breath... blow on it and it will close up! Here, check the video out!
6. Hydnellum peckii
Also called the Bleeding Tooth Fungus, Strawberries and cream, the Red Juice Tooth, and the Devil's Tooth. That red juice coming out of it is supposed to have anticoagulant properties. Although they are not poisonous they are considered to be inedible because of their bitter taste.
7. Polygonum multiflorum
For the last plant, I chose this one. The only thing I will mention about it is that it's called Chinese Fleeceflower, and it's considered to be good for anything. I dare you tho, to look it up... (Is anyone else reminded of Mandrakes from the Harry Potter movies?)
