... always wondered about , is how did the symbols of different things got born.

I mean I could understand the star symbol... If you close one of your eyes and squint a little bit stars look like... well...stars.

But what about the heart?

How did anyone go from this...

To this...

I looked around the internet a little bit just to find out that there is no actual explanation.

There are a few theories about it, sure, but nothing concrete. Here's what I found...

1. It was modeled after an actual heart. Not a human heart though, because the ancient people had more access to cattle...
Oh, and because of the botched up drawings too. Apparently artists around that time made their paintings after some philosopher described what they should draw.
I guess talking to a philosopher at that time was probably like being high... you didn't understand what's going on, but fu*k if you didn't have a good time.

Number 2... which says it's actually depicting female parts. I'm not really sure how comfortable people would be with this one though... drawing vaginas all over your Bible... hey, you know what? I wish this one would be the right one. I wouldn't feel like a pussy whenever someone was drawing stupid hearts around me.

The last theory says that it's actually a seed from some kind of plant. The Silphium plant is extinct for a long time now, but when it was still around it was most commonly used as seasonings, but was also widely used as a contraceptive in ancient Egypt. Because of it's importance to their economy, they depicted the shape of the seed on their coins. The seeds were distinctly heart-shaped. It is said that because of the use of the plant as a contraceptive, the shape of the seeds became associated with sexuality and eventually with romantic love.
